The Chains of Conformity

A SHORT STORY ESSAY

It’s been about three years since I have been fortunate to open my eyes to how the world can indeed be at many detrimental points in life. As cynical as this statement sounds, I say it in the most positive way I possibly can because it prepares me for what’s coming next. It allows me to seek the answers effectively. And one thing that I have never felt is that it kept me off guard, which I began to see that being politically correct just had me engage in biased and stereotypical judgments that get passed upon party to party. Social group to social group. Demographic to demographic. Heritage to heritage. Race to race. Neglecting that one thing that can change someone for the better or the worst. Which that trait is human nature.

My entire life, I couldn’t solve this specific riddle that seems would be something that the legend of the Sphinx would include, which had me think of the question, what makes people turn against their own in the most pressing times. What makes people selfish in times of crisis. Which may be a simple question that you will answer. Which commonly and is a factor, fear. But there is one thing that I began to ponder and think about a little more thoroughly. Of course, fear is the ultimate indication of this, but what motivates an individual to act rudely and dismissively. Which I touch a little bit in my book “Journey of an Unraveled Road.” Where resolving your issues is just the tip of the iceberg because regardless of your intent. Fear takes over. Which began to reveal itself little by little in the history of the city I live in, San Antonio, TX.

One of the things that have been a victim of authentic cancel culture was the African American dominance in the 1700s when families of the Canary Islands ended up migrating from African along with those settlers. Before this, in the 1500s, the Spaniards became the first settlers aside from the indigenous people’s original settlement, which consisted mainly of Towaka and Apache. This crueler treatment to these individuals was far worse than the treatment that slaves were given at the time, as indigenous were deemed nomadic. Which truth followed with the Latino treatment. Another occurrence that cancel culture tends to keep silent. Which the fight Fight of the Alamo would have been a battle between brother and brother. As the Spanish also colonized Mexico. Thus becomes the motivation of greed and power stemmed by human nature.

Fear becomes a very powerful weapon to those with febble minds. Which is why gaslighting is the common manipulation tactic that many use in the face of adversity. Where when you have someone willing to the right thing, it follows with the most cruelest punishment that can be imagined when adversity strikes. While some value the materialistic things, others value their lives. Hoping that they will have the opportunity one day to shoot for the stars. Ignoring what is really happening in their state of silence. Which is why I truly believe that the phrase “I’m trying to keep my head down” or “I don’t want to attract attention” comes into mind. It’s not that it’s a person that lacks motivation. It’s a person that is stricken with fear of the lessons families ended up passing along in their journey of life. Which is something that tends to stick. Which is why it was hard for me to the right thing so many times. To stand up for everyone is something my dad shared with me that costed him his livlihood. Which in many times, my dad always encouraged me to worry about myself. Which worked for a while until I fell upon a bigger shark tank. Which after seeking help and assistance to make things right, people rejected the idealism that at one time in my life, I took personal. But that becomes selfish and insensitive too. Because the truth is it has me worried about my fate and not the fate of everyone involved. Where if it wasn’t for the life awakening, I would of been afraid to stand up to this alone.

If you notice, people who are afraid can never stand up for soemthing on their own. Which is why bandwagoning is something also commonly used in this day and age. The more people you have, the easier it is to stand up against an unknown threat. Like many and history have done Another thing that cancel culture won’t show. Not because it has a minority in the story, but because it makes the team that is meant to be on good. Become the bad guy. Concealing that it was just a manipulation tactic that in a sense limits you to the opportunities that is deemed appropriate by that governing party. Which many tend to ignore for their own personal reason. Which until it affects you, is when it becomes real. Until it happens to you is when it begins to matter. And because of the normalcy of conditioning and conforming. Change is something that never occurs. Not because it’s an impossible thing to accomplish. But because the truth is, it’s dictated by human nature.

After slavery was demolished, it would be passed to the indigenous and deemed the “mutts” of human civilization as Latino culture.  Created with the roots of European blood, Indigenous blood, and African American blood. Another thing that cancels culture seems to omit is the slavery that came upon black and white individuals. And those slaves now freed, also from consistent stories. Had an African American owner. That if they were lucky were treated as they would have wanted to be treated in their former world. Because the truth was, they weren’t white or black.  Those wanting to feel how the other side felt would engage in cruel and inhumane treatment to this race of people. Which if we fast forward to the modern age.  Still tend to be treated in the same manner. Demonizing those who weren’t born in the states. Keeping ourselves in our high horses because we were lucky to be born in a nation with this idealism is free. “This is how the other side feels” is a statement I heard a lot growing up as a child. From almost every adult that I would encounter that would be fortunate enough to step into that world. Many of us as kids used that moment as motivation to make our lives luxurious in our perception and worked our asses off to attain it. Only to find additional problems. But like always. The blessings outweigh the issues, which is why human nature and the fear of going back to a life that we came from one in many cases is out of the question, which is where the conformity begins.

Fear becomes a potent weapon to those with feeble minds. This is why gaslighting is the common manipulation tactic that many use in the face of adversity. When you have someone willing to the right thing, it follows the cruelest punishment that can be imagined when trouble strikes. While some value materialistic things, others value their lives. Hoping that they will have the opportunity one day to shoot for the stars. Ignoring what is happening in their state of silence. This is why I genuinely believe that the phrase “I’m trying to keep my head down” or “I don’t want to attract attention” comes into mind. It’s not that it’s a person that lacks motivation. It’s a person that is stricken with fear of the lessons families ended up passing along in their journey of life, which is something that tends to stick. Because the truth is it has me worried about my fate and not the fate of everyone involved. Where if it weren’t for the life awakening, I would have been afraid to stand up to this alone.

If you notice, people who are afraid can never stand up for something on their own, so bandwagoning is also commonly used in this day and age. The more people you have, the easier it is to stand up against an unknown threat. Many and history have done, cancel culture won’t show because it has a minority in the story.  Because it makes the team that is meant to be on the good. Become the bad guy. Concealing that it was just a manipulation tactic that limits you to that governing party’s deemed appropriate opportunities. Which many tend to ignore for their reason. Which until it affects you, is when it becomes real. Until it happens to you is when it begins to matter. And because of the normalcy of conditioning and conforming. Change is something that never occurs. Not because it’s an impossible thing to accomplish. But because the truth is, it’s dictated by human nature.

What I began to notice about cancel culture is that it becomes an act of retaliation for those who use it.  Having an interior motive of either canceling out the destructive behaviors they engaged in as they wipe their hands clean.  Or used as a plea in the tales of the child who “cried wolf.” Not taking into consideration. The cancel culture has been used throughout people for those who still yet have found their voice.  Having those who use the weapons of privilege keeps those who don’t have the luxury a power tool in canceling those undesired out—continuing in that narrow and biased mentality.  As they say why they are inferior under their breath as they continue to lose the bit of hope those have conserved to make something of themselves in an already unfair life.  Corrupting those with the utmost greatest intentions and abilities with the poison of conformity.  With the belief that “this is just the way things are” and then discarding them like garbage, having those turn into an emotion of rage from the injustice.  Those who believe that they fit in engage the physical actions with the privilege of canceling those inferior out and attracting those with the nectar of poisoned riches.  To keep them cleansed from the act of sin.

Fear by far is the detrimental action needed to protect those looked down upon that seems never to occur.  Why would it?  The consequences can be far more explosive than the desire for change in many.  The truth is. It’s why change never occurs—having those. Settle for the life they live-as long as they have a roof over their head and food on the table.  Which many count their blessings, while others tend to resent the life they live.  Having a hunger for wanting more and, in many cases, for all the wrong reasons.  The truth of the matter, its conformity, and the manipulation of a better life are what keeps those willingly confined in chains.  The fear of living a life that they feel goes nowhere and confines those into the modern version of slavery, which is more emotional and mental idealism—fueling the hope that things will one day be better.  Fairness with an equal chance.  Which is how it becomes the chains of conformity.   Which had my father cringe at the thought of this phenomenon.  Asking himself, when will people gain courage?
